For me, taking away the option to don a swanky fedora like in Pokémon X and Y removes a lot of the personal involvement you feel in your avatar’s quest to become the region’s ultimate Pokémon Master. One major disappointment is the lack of character customisation.
POKEMON ALPHA SAPPHIRE UPGRADE
Also getting a name and feature upgrade are the Secret Bases, now called Super Secret Bases, where you can make your own makeshift haven filled with furniture and plushes and share your creations with others via Nintendo’s SpotPass. The upside to this method of monster hunting as that many have secret moves only usually obtainable by the excessive breeding mechanics that also make a return. With the assistance from the introduction of stealth movement, the DexNav allows you to carefully seek out Pokémon in the wild that visibly rear their heads above the tall grass. However, it’s the all-new DexNav component that really expands the gameplay.
POKEMON ALPHA SAPPHIRE PLUS
The PokéNav also makes its return to Alpha Sapphire, this time upgraded to the moniker of PokéNav Plus by virtue of it bringing back the popular bottom screen features of X and Y.

Primal Evolution on the other hand, a feature currently unique to this remake (and it’s partner remake Omega Ruby), sees the game’s legendary mascot Kyogre regain its prehistoric power in what turns out to be the game’s narrative crescendo. Mega Evolution feels like a natural fit in Hoenn’s world, with Pokémon know-it-all Steven Stone introducing the concept in a way that arguably outshines the debut of Mega Pokémon in X and Y. You mom still shoves you in the back of a truck at the beginning - nothing much has changed in the land of Hoenn. The biggest carry over, however, is the concept of Mega Evolution and its new spiritual kin Primal Evolution. Your room is still the same, though a few smaller items have moved around. The trainer Rich Boy Winston is still there to use wildly overpriced heals on his low-level teams. I won’t spoil the opening cinematic for you, but it’s stuffed with references for experienced players, such as the images it shows or the Pokémon that appear, and it looks gorgeous by the series’ standards. They are nearly identical to the originals, but with all the graphical and gameplay updates from later installments plus some fun new extras. The Pokémon universe has gradually expanded and improved since, but I have a special place in my heart for those early Hoenn trainers and landscapes.Īlpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby are a love-note to longtime Pokémon fans. And like everything else in this remake, it looks great.Īll long-time Pokémon players remember their first game with fondness, and mine was the original Sapphire. Sure, it takes forever to move across the screen, but it’s so worth it. Stop walking and then press lightly on the circle pad and it’ll cause you to sneak, tiptoeing slowly, one step at a time. Sneaking is a grand addition to trainer Pokéabilities. What’s that in the bush? A tail? Ears? Tiptoe up to it and you’ll often bag a Pokémon that’s rare or has better-than-average abilities. Win the coolness competition for example and your monster will be on a cliff, in front of a moon, as red lightning strikes. If you max out the bar that measures audience approval, you see fun, dramatic cutscenes featuring your Pokémon. If you want to enhance the traits of other Pokémon for contests, you’ll still need to make them. Now in those contests you’re given an overpowered Pikachu from the start (mine was wearing the same dress as my character), so if you want to avoid the whole berry-candy-making grind that characterized earlier versions, you can. These enable you to put your Pokémon in the ring versus others based on a wide variety of traits: coolness, cuteness, toughness, cleverness, and beautifulness (yes, in Pokémon, being cute doesn’t make you beautiful). Contests have been around since the original Ruby and Sapphire, but they get new elements in this version.
